What to do at a Veld Fire
If you are doing nothing at a fire – stay home
Vehicles standing around just get in the way
Always remember you need a plan to get out safely if the wind turns
Wear fireproof clothing – long pants, long sleeves, leather gloves and proper shoes
Shorts and plakkies are dangerous and you cannot get close to the fire to put it out properly
If you have a bakkie unit – get behind someone who is busy spraying and put out the small fires left
If you don’t have a unit – invest in a beater and help in the places where a bakkie cannot go
Back burns are useful, but must ALWAYS start downwind
The best way to put out a fire is for bakkies to follow each other – first one kills most of the fires,
next one more, last one puts out all the little fires
The person in front gets tired – after a while should pull out and go to the back – number 2 is fresher
Someone who puts out smouldering material and prevents a flare up is more useful than
someone who needs to be in front
“Heroes” or people with egos either get in the way or become patients

VELD FIRES 101:
COMMUNICATION
Remember that the person at the fire is fighting the fire and monitoring the messages
Do not repeat a message that has already been sent
Do not repeat yourself on a voice note – plan the message before you record it
Check your message before you send – some messages are impossible to understand
Use pin drops or farm numbers to give location
We will be creating a WhatsApp group for each fire – only work on that group
If you are not able to fight a fire, you can bring water and something to eat for the people working
If you have a strong water source, send a location pin on the WhatsApp group. This must be
   more than a hose pipe
Have someone available to show where to go and assist
Call for help:
   Namola App
Phone Heidelberg Volunteer Medics and First Responders on 076 132 3067

Continue to apply water for at least 30 minutes or until medical help arises
Pliers to cut fences
